LIFE IS BORING,

WITHOUT THE ARTS.

Life is Boring, Without the Arts highlights the creative arts as a career through the experiences of artists in different fields. The negative perception of a creative arts career is prevalent, with many seeing it more as a ‘hobby’ or an ‘easy-out’ career-wise. This publication can guide and inspire high school students toward a successful and fulfilling future that aligns with their creative aspirations.

RESEARCH SUMMARY

Written Responses by Design Students and Alunmi

Research methods
Three surveys (Students, Industry workers, and Parents), four interviews with artists from different fields, two ethnographies (dance studio, and design workroom), and a visual analysis through social media.

Research findings

  • Creative artists feel like they lack the understanding of the process of creating and what it’s like ‘behind-the-scenes.’

  • Passion for these fields begins at an early age, but over time, burnout and imposter syndrome increase.

  • The environments where artists create display the contrast of hard work and having fun.

  • AI consumption raises concerns; however, confidence that AI will become ‘outdated’.
